2010: Jon Lilygreen & the Islanders - Life looks better in Spring

Jon Lilygreen was born on 4 August 1987 in the Welsh city of Newport.  He’s well known throughout south Wales, having performed many acoustic sets at pubs and clubs, as well as the prestigious Celtic Manor Country Club.

Writers Nasos and Melis had written the song, but couldn’t find anyone suitable to sing it.  Cue the Internet.  After a bit of searching, they happened across Jon, who was the perfect vocalist.  Throw in performers Charalambos Kallonas (Cyprus), Katherine Squire, Sean Watts (both from England), Jon Gregory (Scotland) and Sylvia Strand (Norway), and you have the Islanders.

  • About the selection

Cypriot state broadcaster CyBC announced in October 2009 its intention to hold a national final to select a song for Oslo.  Songwriters had to either be Cypriot nationals, or EU citizens and resident in Cyprus for at least two years.  The deadline for submission was 27 November 2009.  A seven-member jury then selected 20 songs which were then whittled down to ten for a televised national final.  One song, written by 2008 Bulgarian entrants Deep Zone was disqualified, as their song had appeared on Youtube, thus breaching CyBC’s rules.  As a result, only nine songs competed in the final.

Among the competing songwriters were former Cypriot entrant Constantinos Christoforou (1996, 2002, 2005), Mike Connaris, writer of the 2004 song Stronger every minute, and Matheson Bayley, who appeared as a cellist for France’s 2006 entry Il était temps performed by Virginie Pouchain.

As with many other countries this year, a 50/50 jury and televote decided the winning song.  Life looks better in Spring received maximum votes from both elements, finishing well clear of Constantinos in second place.

  • About the song

Life looks better in Spring is a song about a holiday romance, and how memories can fade with long distance relationships.  Jon hopes that she still feels something for him, despite the distance.

This is one of those rare songs that doesn’t actually mention the full title of the song in the song itself.

  • Lyrics

Time changes everything, even you and I have changed
The rain the winters bring has made us fade away
I still remember everything, that old December, the fears, the cold
I really wonder how you feel on these nights, all alone

I hope someday you'll see me
I hope someday you'll spot me in the crowd
Take my hand and kiss me
I hope someday you'll say my name out loud

(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
Look into my eyes and come on closer, make me immortal with a kiss
(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
We know it's over, so tell me it's over and life will be better in spring

Time changes everything, but this feeling, it still remains
The sweetness of the lips I kissed will always be the same

I hope someday you'll see me
I hope someday you'll spot me in the crowd
Smile and say you miss me
I hope someday you'll say my name out loud

(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
Look into my eyes and come on closer, make me immortal with a kiss
(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
We know it's over, so tell me it's over and life will be better in spring

(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
Look into my eyes and come on closer, make me immortal with a kiss
(Tell me) Tell me about your feelings, tell me about your stories
We know it's over, so tell me it's over and life will be better in spring
