2010: InCulto - East European Funk

InCulto is led by Jurgis Didžiulis, a Colombian-born Luthuanian.  He’s married to Irish-born Erica Jennings, who represented Lithuania as part of the group Skamp in 2001.  The other members of InCulto are Jievaras Jasinskis, Laurynas Lapė, Sergej Makidon, Aurelijus Morlencas.

InCulto was formed in 2003, when Didžiulis started experimenting with Latin rhythms and funk in the Lithuanian club scene.  One year later they released their first album, PostSovPop, which spawned several singles.  In 2006 InCulto received a nomination as Best Baltic Act in the MTV Europe Music Awards – losing out to Latvian Eurovision participants Brainstorm.

Also in 2006 InCulto made their first bid for Eurovision success, taking part in the Lithuanian National Final with the slightly irreverant song Welcome to Lithuania.  They came second to LT United.

Didžiulis has also acted, taking the part of Judas Iscariot in the Andrew Lloyd-Webber Jesus Christ Superstar.

In the semi final

  • Which semi final? Semi-Final 2
  • Starting position 1
  • About the selection

In December 2009, Lithuanian Television announced they would be withdrawing from the 2010 Eurovision due to financial constraints.  Funding was then received from communications company Teo LT to the tune of €90,000, which enabled LRT to organise a national final.

Lithuania’s national selection was televised over two stages.  Thirty-four songs were narrowed down to twelve over the course of three semi-finals held in February 2010.  A combination of jury and tele-voting was used, in order to prepare the winning act for the voting system in use at Eurovision itself.  Among the other performers were former participants Sasha Son (2009) and 4Fun (2007).  The top three songs from each semi-final made the final, along with three wild cards, incidentally all from the third semi-final.

InCulto won their semi-final even though they were only the jury’s fifth favourite – they scored maximum from the televoting.  In the final they scored a maximum, being the preferred choice from both the jury and tele-voters.

  • About the song

East European funk is inspired by the ska music style, most popular in the 1980s.  It tells that we are all Europeans, despite the fact that some of us might get ignored or left behind.  Since Lithuania joined the EU in 2004, many of its younger people have moved abroad, seeking a better life.  However, There is a hint of protest in the song, in that Lithuanians work in more menial positions.

  • Lyrics

You've seen it all before, we ain't got no taste, we're all a bore
You should give us a chance, 'cause we're all victims of circumstance
We've had it pretty tough, but that's okay, we like it rough
We'll settle the score, survived the reds and two world wars

Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk

Yes sir, we are legal, we are, though we're not as legal as you
No sir, we're not equal, no, though we're both from the EU
We build your homes, we wash your dishes, keep your hands all squeaky clean
Some day you'll come to realise Eastern Europe is in your genes

Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…

Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk

Get up and dance to our… get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our… get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our… get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda…

Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk
Get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk
Get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk
Get up and dance to our…
Get up and dance to our Eastern European kinda funk
