Leyla Qafari wins 5th heat of Azeri Milli Seçim Turu

The Azeri selections, Milli Seçim Turu, continued with its 5th heat on the road to Malmö. In the last three countdowns to the semi-final stage of these selections, Leyla Qafari secured herself a place for the next round.

After a week’s break in the selections last week when the day of mourning was commemorated in Azerbaijan, the selection joy in last year’s host country continued with the fifth heat. Nine participants including Mustafa Mustafayev, Akif Əliyev, Rəna Xəlilova, Vüsal Nəsibov, Leyla Qafari, Elvin Babazadə, Sevinc Thunold, Cəlal Abbasov and Aftandil Məmmədov tried to get a ticket to the semi-final stage. A usual package of acts was kept on presenting over five days:

•    Monday: Eurovision Hits
•    Tuesday: Azeri Music
•    Wednesday: World Hits
•    Thursday: Stage Performance
•    Friday: Free Style (Participants may re-perform some of their previous songs in the selection)

The biggest surprise act of the week came out from Vüsal who had special costumes, masks and make-ups during the week which made most of the viewers were surprised, but unfortunately his vocal performance wasn’t so impressive. On the world-hits day of Wednesday, he sang Azeri version of Rihanna’s Where Have You Been in a skeleton costume using a zombie mask, which we mostly didn’t get the point of his message at all. So far, he was getting himself a place in the bottom line of televoting results each day.

The most unlucky name was Sevinc Thunold, who so far  had several backstage accidents and sound problems during the week, but fortunately she never lost her passion for the semi-final which she could have almost reached.
As usual, the televoting results of each day were added to the poll, which is also combined with the jury results at the end of fifth show like in previous heats. The combined results of heat four is as follows:

2 points: Vüsal Nəsibov
3 points: Aftandil Məmmədov
4 points: Mustafa Mustafayev
6 points: Rəna Xəlilova
7 points: Akif Əliyev
8 points: Elvin Babazadə
10 points: Sevinc Tunhold
12 points: Leyla Qafari
One of the most successful names over five days, Leyla Qafari, got the most points both from televoting and the juries which led her to the semi-final. Last year’s host country, Azerbaijan, will compete at the first half of second semi-final in Malmö. Though this small country participated in 2008 for the very first time, they have found themselves a spot in the final each year up to now, also finishing at top 10 each year.
