La Casa Azul leads online voting in Spain

Spain, like the rest of the Big 4, has had a hard time of it in Eurovision over the last few years. In another desperate attempt to stop their downward spiral the Spaniards have once again given their national selection process a major overhaul.

It seems that this new format has united Spain behind La Casa Azul. La Casa Azul are a popular band from Spain and have had moderate success. This year, like many fellow Spanish Chart toppers, they decided to enter a song to TVE for Eurovision. Their unique style has garnered them a lot of attention since they declared their interest in the contest.

The voting for the selection of the finalists began on the official myspace site a couple of days ago, but had to close shortly afterward because of a overwhelming number of hits. The votes that had been cast were discounted and voting began again today. The figures for the current tally can be found here;
CURRENT TOTALS

At the time of writing the band ‘La Casa Azul’ had a lead of over 700 votes from the nearest challenger. The voting will close on the 26th of February and voters can choose any of the 531 potential entries. In the final, to be held on March 1st, 10 songs will compete for the Spanish ticket to Belgrade. Five of the songs will be voted in by the online voting and the other five by an expert jury.

The current incarnation of La Casa Azul’s song is over four and a half minutes long, so it will have to undergo a severe editing if it is to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest.

In my view

Eurovision doesn’t get much better than this. It takes a while but Eurovision can throw up some gems of songs and this is one of them. Even if this is selected as the Spanish entry and does poorly in Belgrade at least the Spaniards can be happy that they picked a great song.
