Birthe Kjær and Felix Smith to host Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2009

She has participated five times in the Danish selection, the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. Won it once where she afterwards came third in the Eurovision Song Contest. She has twice before been hosting the national final and now she is back as host together with radio host Felix Smith.

Danish broadcaster, DR, will on a press conference Friday present the 10 acts that will compete in the 2009 Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, but the announcement today of Birthe Kjær as one of the host is sure to make many fans look forward to the show on the 31st of January.

She has competed in the Danish national final herself five times in the period from 1980 to 1991. She won it once in 1989 with the song called Vi Maler Byen Rød, finishing third in the Eurovision Song Contest and has by many been rated as one of the best songs from Denmark. In 1990 and 2005 she hosted the Danish selection and has also been hosting various other TV programs. Still being active as a singer, she celebrated her 40 years anniversary in show business last year.

Birthe Kjær’s co-host this year, Felix Smith, is mainly known from radio. Last autumn he hosted Talent 2008, a talent show on DR, so to find him hosting the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix is not such a big surprise.

Many have a tendency to forget Birthe Kjær as one of the host from the 2005 Danish selection as the whole format that year was quite confusing with each song having their own host – aside from the main hosts of the program.

The 2009 Dansk Melodi Grand Prix will take place on 31st of January live from Jutlandic city Herning. In the video below you can see Birthe Kjær in her Eurovision Song Contest performance from 1989.
