Olsen Brothers flying high with Eurovision cover versions

Olsen Brothers - Wings Of Eurovision

Rating: 4

It is ten years ago Denmark won the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest. The Olsen Brothers are celebrating that with a brand new album with Eurovision cover versions. On some songs they are true to the original while they on others comes up with a brand new arrangement. It works very well and we are asking for a volume 2.

About the contest:

The small principality of Luxembourg won for the fourth time, this meant it joined France on top of the winners list. It was also the second successive victory. Possibly because of finishing last with their first two entries, Malta withdrew. Austria also withdrew but Israel joined the Eurovision family. All in all, seventeen countries took part. Cliff Richard and Massimo Ranieri both appeared for the second time. The Spanish entry, Eres Tu, went on to be one of the most successful songs to emerge from the contest.

The voting system remained the same from the two previous years. Two people from each country of differing genders and generations marked each song out of five. The jurors were on camera, and the gentleman from Switzerland took full advantage of his 15 minutes of fame. His facial expressions and flair when holding up his scorecard were very entertaining.

Trivia:
There were rumours that RTE wanted to replace Maxi with Tina, who went on to represent the Emerald Isle a year later. Maxi is very scornful of the possibility it could have happened, “She couldn’t even get into the building.”
About the songs:
Marion RungMarion Rung

Finland - Marion Rung - Tom, Tom, Tom (English)

Music/Lyrics: Rauno Lehtinen/Rauno Lehtinen

Conductor: Ossi Runne

Marion sung in English and not only repeated the title several times, there were also more than enough la’s in this lively ditty to get the 18th contest underway.

 Nicole & HugoNicole & Hugo

Belgium - Nicole and Hugo - Baby, Baby (English)

Music/Lyrics: Ignace Baert/Erik Marijsse

Conductor: Francis Bay

An injury to Nicole prevented the duo from singing in the 1971 contest. Looking the height of fashion, their purple flares were to the fore as they kicked their way through this chirpy and entertaining little number.

Fernando TordoFernando Tordo Portugal - Fernando Tordo - Tourada (Portuguese)

Music/Lyrics: Fernando Tordo/José Carlos Ary dos Santos

Conductor: Jorge Costa Pinto

Fernando marched on the spot for a lot of his performance. Quite suitable as there is a hint of the military about the Portuguese entry.

 GitteGitte

Germany - Gitte - Junger Tag (German)

Music/Lyrics: Gunther-Eric Thőner/Erich Offierowski

Conductor: Gunther-Eric Thőner

After a strong brass intro, things calm down for the first verse and then pick up again to mid-tempo for the chorus. The mid-tempo pace remains until the end.

 The Bendik SingersThe Bendik Singers

Norway - The Bendik Singers - It's Just a Game (English/French)

Music/Lyrics: Arne Bendiksen/ Arne Bendiksen

Conductor: Carsten Klouman

Mixing both the harmonies and languages (English and French), it could be a very irritating little ditty. For those who don’t find it irritating, it’s a good sing-a-long which offers a bit of variety without being messy.

MarieMarie Monaco - Marie - Un Train Qui Part (French)

Music/Lyrics: Bernard Liamis/Boris Bergman

Conductor: Jean-Claude Vannier

A very timid looking Marie entered the stage. She had no reason to be timid. Her performance was more than adequate and the song sounded like a contender.

 MocedadesMocedades

Spain - Mocedades - Eres Tu (Spanish)

Music/Lyrics: Juan Carlos Calderón/ Juan Carlos Calderón

Conductor: Juan Carlos Calderón

This song was a big international hit after the contest in its original language. The whole group performed with belief in what they were doing, contributing well to the visual effect.

Patrick JuvetPatrick Juvet Switzerland - Patrick Juvet - Je Me Vais Marier, Marie (French)

Music/Lyrics: Patrick Juvet/Pierre Delanoë

Conductor: Hervé Roy

Patrick rather arrogantly tells an ex that he is marrying someone else. There is little sympathy for the ex in the performance or the melody.

 Zdravko ColicZdravko Colic

Yugoslavia - Zdravko Colic - Gori Vatra (Serbo-Croat)

Music/Lyrics: Kemal Montemo/Kemal Montemo

Conductor: Esad Arnautalic

The whole song is very intense, as was Zdtavko’s performance. As a result, it is very memorable, not a bad thing.

Massimo RanieriMassimo Ranieri Italy - Massimo Ranieri - Chi Sarà Con Te (Italian)

Music/Lyrics: Enrico Polito/Gaetano Savio

Conductor: Enrico Polito

Massimo is not just a singer, he is also an actor and he showed both skills as he performed at the contest for the second time. Chi Sara con Te is less Neapolitan than his song from the 1971 contest, and more like background music in a restaurant.

 Anne-Marie DavidAnne-Marie David Luxembourg - Anne-Marie David - Tu Te Reconnaîtras (French)

Music/Lyrics: Claude Morgan/Vline Buggy

Conductor: Pierre Cao

Luxembourg won for the second time in succession and the fourth time overall. It was thoroughly deserved, a powerful song which never lets the listener s ear to stray to other things. The passage of time has been kind to the song; it has lost none of its appeal.

The NovaThe Nova Sweden - The Nova and The Dolls - You Are Summer (English)

Music/Lyrics: Monica Dominique, Carl-Axel Dominique

Conductor: Monica Dominique

The Nova were two men, they had to be given some of the lyrics! The song itself is quite melodic and isn’t too dissimilar to what Simon and Garfunkel were doing at the time.

Ben CramerBen Cramer The Netherlands - Ben Cramer - De Oude Muzikant (Dutch)

Music/Lyrics: Pierre Kartner/Pierre Kartner

Conductor: Harry van Hoof

De Oude Muzikant is a slightly old fashioned song. The use of the accordion and slight um-pa-pa feel to the arrangement conjures up images of the fairground.

MaxiMaxi Ireland - Maxi - Do I Dream? (English)

Music/Lyrics: Jack Brierly, George Crosbie/ Jack Brierly, George Crosbie

Conductor: Colman Pearce

The Irish entry didn’t stand out from the crowd, being pleasant, but no more than average fare.

Cliff RichardCliff Richard United Kingdom - Cliff Richard - Power To All Our Friends (English)

Music/Lyrics: Guy Fletcher, Doug Flett/Guy Fletcher, Doug Flett

Conductor: David MacKay

The BBC persuaded Cliff to return to the contest for a second time. The song the British public chose for him had a soft rock atmosphere to the chorus, and some very silly choreography.

Martine ClémenceauMartine Clémenceau France - Martine Clémenceau - Sans Toi (French)

Music/Lyrics: Paul Koulak/Anne Gregory

Conductor: Jean Claudric

After trying something different in 1972, the French went back to what they did best, the big ballad.

 IlanitIlanit Israel - Ilanit - Ey-sham (Hebrew)

Music/Lyrics: Nurit Hirsh/Ehud Manor

Conductor: Nurit Hirsh

Israel’s debut song is dramatic and powerful, as was Ilanit’s performance. The piano is heard clearly in the arrangement.

1968

Basic information
Date:
6 April 1968
Venue:
Royal Albert Hall, London, United Kingdom
Broadcaster:
BBC
Presenter(s):
Katie Boyle
About the contest:

Organising the contest for the third time, the BBC again called on the linguistic skills of Katie Boyle to host the event, also for the third time. They also secured the talents of Cliff Richard to represent his country. His song, Congratulations, became a huge hit. Spain achieved its first win with Massiels La La La, one of the most ridiculed songs to come from the contest. Isabelle Aubret returned for France with a very serious song six years after she won the contest. As sometimes happens, rumours surfaced after the contest that votes were 'bought' by General Franco to help Spain, and that Cliff would have won had the voting been a true reflection of the opinions of the jurors.

As happened in 1967, each country had a jury of ten people who gave a point to their favourite song.

Trivia:
The title of Cliff Richard’s song was not originally 'Congratulations'. The word 'Congratulations' replaced the original words, 'I think I love you'. When Bill Martin heard this, he thought it was “a load of rubbish.” His reasoning was that you don’t say that to someone, you say either ‘I love you’ or I don’t love you'. The words were subsequently changed to the version that is so well known today.
About the songs:
Carlos MendesCarlos Mendes Portugal - Carlos Mendes – Verão (Portuguese)
Music/Lyrics: Pedro Osório/José Alberto Diogo
Conductor: Joaquim Luis Gomes

All is going well until the first chorus, where the song takes an unexpected and slightly odd turn. The effect is to make the song sound messy.

Ronnie ToberRonnie Tober The Netherlands - Ronnie Tober – Morgen (Dutch)
Music/Lyrics: Joop Stokkermans/Theo Strengers
Conductor: Dolf Van Der Linden

Ronnie gives a cheerful performance of Morgen, which is a decent enough song without being inspiring.

Claude LombardClaude Lombard Belgium - Claude Lombard - Quand Tu Reviendras (French)
Music/Lyrics: Jo van Wetter/Roland Dero
Conductor: Henri Segers

Claude made her way through a very gentle and understated ballad. Her voice helps to give the song a nice, haunting quality.

Karel GottKarel Gott Austria - Karel Gott - Tausend Fenster (German)
Music/Lyrics: Udo Jürgens/Walter Brandin
Conductor: Robert Opratko

For the sixth year in a row, Austria entered a ballad, and a powerful one at that. Karel sings it like he means it.

Chris Baldo and Sophie GarelChris Baldo and Sophie Garel Luxembourg - Chris Baldo and Sophie Garel - Nous Vivrons d'Amour (French)
Music/Lyrics: Carlos Leresche/Jacques Demarny
Conductor: André Borly

Despite being one of three songs sung by a duo this year, Chris does most of the work. In fact, Sophie only joins in during the chorus.

Gianni MascoloGianni Mascolo Switzerland - Gianni Mascolo - Guardando Il Sole (Italian)
Music/Lyrics: Aldo d'Addario/Sanzio Chiesa
Conductor: Mario Robbiani

With possibly the best song they had sent to date, Switzerland were ‘looking at the sun’ and reaching for the stars with this classy, strings based ballad. Maybe Gianni’s orange suit put the jurors off.

Line and WillyLine and Willy Monaco - Line and Willy - A Chacun Sa Chanson (French)
Music/Lyrics: Jean-Claude Olivier/Roland Valade
Conductor: Michel Colombier

Generous use of the accordion makes this song more memorable than it otherwise would have been. There is a key change, but the tempo and melody stay the same.

Claes-Göran HederströmClaes-Göran Hederström Sweden - Claes-Göran Hederström - Det Börjar Verka Kärlek, Banne Mej (Swedish)
Music/Lyrics: Peter Himmelstrand/Peter Himmelstrand
Conductor: Mats Olsson

As well as having one of the longest titles in the history of the contest, this is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, as is Claes’ performance. In an era when the singer basically stood behind the microphone and sang, it’s a lively one.

Kristina HautalaKristina Hautala Finland – Kristina Hautala - Kun Kello Käy (Finnish)
Music/Lyrics: Esko Linnavalli/Juha Vainio
Conductor: Ossi Runne

This is a nice mid-tempo song which moves along steadily and contains no surprises. It makes for pleasant listening, though.

Isabelle AubretIsabelle Aubret France - Isabelle Aubret – La Source (French)
Music/Lyrics: Daniël Faure/Guy Bonnet and Henri Dijan
Conductor: Alain Goraguer

La Source is one of the most fondly remembered songs from the 1968 contest. It’s an infinitely superior ballad to Isabelle’s 1962 winner. C’est la vie.

Sergio EndrigoSergio Endrigo Italy - Sergio Endrigo – Marianne (Italian)
Music/Lyrics: Sergio Endrigo/Sergio Endrigo
Conductor: Giancarlo Chiaramello
Sergio won the Sanremo festival with a different song, Canzone Per Te. Marianne is slightly different from the stereotypical Italian song, relying on guitar as much as strings. It moves along with a fluent tempo.
Cliff RichardCliff Richard United Kingdom - Cliff Richard – Congratulations (English)
Music/Lyrics: Bill Martin and Phil Coulter/Bill Martin and Phil Coulter
Conductor: Norrie Paramor

In Cliff Richard, the BBC had persuaded one of the biggest international stars ever to sing in the contest to perform in his own contest. The song (which was a big hit in many countries) was written by the same team who wrote Puppet on a String. It can still be heard at birthday parties over 40 years later.

Odd BørreOdd Børre Norway - Odd Børre - Stress (Norwegian)
Music/Lyrics: Tor Hultin/Ola B. Johannessen
Conductor: Øivind Bergh

No-one could accuse Odd of not being enthusiastic. He sways Tom Jones like and adds to the impact of the song. A fat lot of good it did him!

Pat McGeeganPat McGeegan Ireland - Pat McGeegan - Chance Of A Lifetime (English)
Music/Lyrics: John Kennedy/John Kennedy
Conductor: Noel Kelehan

Pat, father of former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan, continued Ireland’s by now predictable sequence of sending a male singing a ballad. That aside, it’s a decent song and does what it needs to do.

MassielMassiel Spain – Massiel – La, La, La (Spanish)
Music/Lyrics: Ramón Arcusa and Manuel de la Calva/Ramón Arcusa and Manuel de la Calva
Conductor: Rafael Ibarbia

Forty years after it won, La La La is still used as an example of a typical Eurovision song. The verses are calm and the chorus a bit more bouncy.

Wencke MyhreWencke Myhre Germany - Wencke Myhre - Ein Hoch Der Liebe (German)
Music/Lyrics: Horst Jankowski/Carl Schäuble
Conductor: Horst Jankowski

Norwegian Wencke sung for Germany. It’s lively and Wencke’s face is very expressive throughout.

Luci Kapurso and Hamo HajdarhodzicLuci Kapurso and Hamo Hajdarhodzic Yugoslavia - Luci Kapurso and Hamo Hajdarhodzic - Jedan Dan (Serbo Croat)
Music/Lyrics: Djelo Jusic and Stipica Kalogjera/Stipica Kalogjera
Conductor: Miljenko Prohaska

The use of a traditional guitar gives Jedan Dan an appeal it would otherwise be lacking. The song opens with the chorus, moving into a more melodic verse.

Cliff Richard says no to Big Brother due to bathroom issue

Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard should have participated in Celebrity Big Brother that starts in January. He had first been promised a private bathroom without cameras, but as the producers couldn’t live up to that he cancelled his participation.

Olsen Brothers – Respect

Olsen Brothers - Respect.jpg

Rating: 3.5

Olsen Brothers latest album features Cliff Richard on two of the songs; one written by Cliff and the other one by the brothers shortly after they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000. It is called Respect, but do Jørgen and his younger brother Niels “Noller” Olsen deserve that this time?

The Shadows

The Shadows © Den Danske Shadows Klub
Year(s) of participation:
1975

When The Shadows in 1975 sang out  "Let Me Be The One” at the Eurovision Song Contest, Europe almost agreed to let them be that.
