Sabina Babayeva will perform the powerful and emotional ballad When The Music Dies, which includes a unique ethnic vibe of Azerbaijani national instruments. National instruments remain in wide use within the nation due to its symbolic and cultural importance.
When The Music Dies is a ballad about the power of music which keeps us alive. The song should appeal to both the Eastern and Western audiences at the Eurovision Song Contest.
About the participant:
Since 2008 Sabina Babayeba has participated consistently in the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, but it wasn't until 2012 she finally won.
Sabina Babayeva was born on the 2nd of December 1979 in Baku. She graduated from the music college named after Asaf Zeynalli. Sabina is a skillful singer of pop and soul genres and of balllad musical movements. She also knows about 50 of the "Jazz Standards". She has been the soloist for the "Aypara" vocal instumental ensemble for more than 7 years.
In 2001, she was the winner of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the "The Golden Key" contest for young singers and in 2009 she received the "Amberstar" award in Latvia and the "Gran Prix" award in Moscow at the "Slavic Star".
She has also performed solo at the Baku Jazz Club and in 2010, she took the role of Fleur-de-Lys in the musical Notre-Dame de Paris where her counterpart was Azerbaijan's representative in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest Elnur Huseynov.
About the selection:
The Azerbaijani national selection for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest consisted of 8 preliminary heats, a semi-final and a final. In each of the preliminary heats a total of 9 acts were competing for just one place in the semi-final.
The preliminary heats lasted from Mondays to Fridays with each day having a new theme:
Monday: World Hits
Tuesday: Azeri Music
Wednesday: Eurovision Hits
Thursday: Performance Day
Friday: Participants' Choice
Once a week had ended one of the participants went straight to the semi-final leaving the other 8 out of the competition and on the following Monday another 9 acts were ready to repeat the whole thing.
In week 7 we first saw Sabine Babayeva in action. On a fantastic comeback she managed to win the position for the semi-final, but it wasn't easy. Before the last performance on the Friday she was to be found in 8th place with only 170 votes where as Ayla İdrisova was clearly in the lead with a total of 3247 votes. One outstanding performance on the last day however was enough to totally change the picture and Sabine secured herself a place in the semi-final.
In the semi-final the 8 qualified acts were reduced to 5 - and once again it didn't look like it would be Sabine represented Azerbaijan on homefield this year. She finished 4th in the semi-final with 1098 votes where the winner Orhan Kerimli recieved 2259 votes.
Through to the final were Orhan Kerimli, Arzu İsmailova, Elton İbrahimov, Sabina Babayeva and Feqan Seferov. All of them sang three songs each in the final - all cover versions as the actual song for the Eurovision Song Contest would be announced at a later moment.
In the preliminary heats as well as in the semi-final the result was decided based on a 50/50 combination of televoting and a professionel jury, but in the final the jury alone decided the winner. They decided that it should be Sabine representing Azerbaijan at the 2012 contest.
More than a month later the song When The Music Dies was presented as the song she will be singing in the final in May.
