We can safely assertain that almost every year of late, the Ukranian selection brings with it some sort of scandal and this year proved to be no exception. Whereas last year's final was overshadowed by accusations of voting rigging, this year's result would hit the headlines for entirely different reasons. Ukranian broadcaster NTU confirmed their participation for 2012 relatively early, releasing a press statement on the 23rd of August.
Former entrants Philip Kirkorov (Russia 1995) and Ukrania's very own disco diva Ani Lorak (2008) were also involved in the project, hosting their show Show #1 in order to find a suitable candidate to participate in the national final. The show was an unmittigated success, drawing in enviable viewing figures. NTU opened for submissions to made on the 25th of November with an original deadline set for the 25th of December. The deadline was later extendedby a whole month, closing on the 25th of January.
A number of names were on peoples lips as possible contenders for the chance to represent Ukraine in Baku, amongst them Quest Pistols and Max Barskih. Former Russian entrant from 2009, Anastasia Prikhodko stated that she intended to try once again to take to the Eurovision stage, this time for her own country. Details began to emerge by late December, claiming there were to be 21 hopefuls in the nation final line up - nineteen entries selected by a jury, one entry from the TV show Show #1 and one entry selected by means of an nternet competition organised by TV network Say.tv.
An official announcment came on the 25th of January revealing all finalists chosen by the professional jury at NTU. The number of finalists was subsequently amended to be 22 in total. The date for the final was also confirmed as being on the 18th of February. Mid February saw the numer opf finalists once again readjusted to 21 in total, following the disqualification of Matias due to the fact that his manager had sat on the jury responsible for selecting the lucky finalists. All songs were made available online on the 17th of February. The winner of the final was to be determined by a combination of jury votes and televoting.
In a bizarre twist of events, the previously disqualified Matias was invited along as one of the guest artists together with French entrant Anggun and former Ukranian entrant from 2010 Aloysha.
