About the participant:
Gaitana, whose actual name is Gaita-Lurdes Essami, was born in Kyiv in 1979 to a ukranian mother and a congolese father. The exotic beauty has actually spent five years in her father's homeland. She subsequently moved back to Ukraine along with her mother, while her father remained in Brazzaville to run his succesfull transportation business. She showed an interest in music from an early age, studying the saxophone at a music school.

Since bursting onto the Ukranian music scene alomst ten years ago, she has managed to release six albums: О тебе (About You in 2003), Слідом за тобою (Following You in 2005), Капли дождя (Raindrops in 2007), a children's compilation album Kукaбaррa (Kookaburra in 2008), Тайные желания (Secret Desires in 2008) which won earned her a Golden Record award for album sales and her latest offering, Только сегодня (Only Today in 2010).

Throughout her whole career she has remained with the same record label, Lavina Music. Her nigh on ten year career has produced some truly massive hits in her homeland, most notably the single Shaleniy in 2007 which topped most national charts for nine consecutive weeks, consolidating her star status and making her the artist to aspire to. Gaitana's dedication and hard work has paid dividends, with awards being heaped upon her, such as both Best album and Best female singer at the Ukranian Music awards in 2008.

Her meteoric rise to fame has not gone unnoticed overseas either, attracting great interest and resulting in a collaboration with major producer Narada Michael Walden (who is also known for his work with another soul diva, the late Whitney Houston). The talented and dedicated artist experienced yet another career highlight, when invited to perform at Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony in 2009.

But Gaitana the woman is so much more about merely music. Did you know for example that she is multilingual, speaking both Ukranian, English and Russian in addition to French and Lingala. And just to prove furthermore (as if any proof was needed!) that she is not just beauty but brains as well, she also boasts a degree in economics. As if that wasn't enough, the dark beauty also has a philanthropic side to her too, taking part in and supoprting numerous charitable events, including an anti AIDS organisation, various children's organisations, as well as her work for UNICEF.

The versatile performer is currently working on her next album, slated for release in the not too distant future. The project is led by Narada Michael Walden, Eric Daniels, Rob Hoffman and Robert Damper, with recording taking place in the United States.
About the selection:

We can safely assertain that almost every year of late, the Ukranian selection brings with it some sort of scandal and this year proved to be no exception. Whereas last year's final was overshadowed by accusations of voting rigging, this year's result would hit the headlines for entirely different reasons. Ukranian broadcaster NTU confirmed their participation for 2012 relatively early, releasing a press statement on the 23rd of August.

Former entrants Philip Kirkorov (Russia 1995) and Ukrania's very own disco diva Ani Lorak (2008) were also involved in the project, hosting their show Show #1 in order to find a suitable candidate to participate in the national final. The show was an unmittigated success, drawing in enviable viewing figures. NTU opened for submissions to made on the 25th of November with an original deadline set for the 25th of December. The deadline was later extendedby a whole month, closing on the 25th of January.

A number of names were on peoples lips as possible contenders for the chance to represent Ukraine in Baku, amongst them Quest Pistols and Max Barskih. Former Russian entrant from 2009, Anastasia Prikhodko stated that she intended to try once again to take to the Eurovision stage, this time for her own country. Details began to emerge by late December, claiming there were to be 21 hopefuls in the nation final line up - nineteen entries selected by a jury, one entry from the TV show Show #1 and one entry selected by means of an nternet competition organised by TV network Say.tv.

An official announcment came on the 25th of January revealing all finalists chosen by the professional jury at NTU. The number of finalists was subsequently amended to be 22 in total. The date for the final was also confirmed as being on the 18th of February. Mid February saw the numer opf finalists once again readjusted to 21 in total, following the disqualification of Matias due to the fact that his manager had sat on the jury responsible for selecting the lucky finalists. All songs were made available online on the 17th of February. The winner of the final was to be determined by a combination of jury votes and televoting.

In a bizarre twist of events, the previously disqualified Matias was invited along as one of the guest artists together with French entrant Anggun and former Ukranian entrant from 2010 Aloysha.

About the song:
Be My Guest is not only the Ukranian entry this year, but is also the unofficial Ukranian anthem for this year's European Football Championship, the Euro 2012. It is a highly energetic dance track, with soulful vocals combined with a hint of African chanting, reflecting Gaitana's Ukranian-Congolese heritage. The song is written and composed by the singer herself, delivering something of a punch and featuring a sound and arrangement that reminds us of club hits from the 1990's such as Robyn S Show Me Love. The lyrics see Gaitana offer everyone a warm welcome, stating that she wants people to become friends with her, encouraging listeners to live their lives and to not be afraid to show love.
