Filipa Azevedo was born near the Portuguese city of Porto on 31 July 1991. After learning to play the flute, she started to concentrate on singing.
In 2007 she participated to the Portuguese show Familia Superstar, eventually winning. During the course of this show, media mogul Tozé Brito (writer of Penso em ti, eu sei for Adelaide in 1985) likened her voice to that of Beyoncé.
In 2009 she released her first eponymously-titled album, which sadly didn't do quite as well as expected. Her voice shone through, although the promotion appeared to be lacking.
She is currently living and studying music technology and musical production in London.
Portuguese broadcaster RTP thought big this year. Songwriters had until mid-January to submit entries for the competition. They didn't have to be Portuguese, although this restriction did apply to the performers of the songs. The songs also had to be in Portuguese. Thirty songs chosen from the 420 submitted were put on RTP's website, allowing online voting. One of these was later disqualified for being released before the deadline. Only 90 seconds of each song was available, with the top 24 proceeding to the next stage.
The televised stage of the selection was held at the old bullring in Lisbon, capable of hosting up to 10,000 spectators. The final 24 songs were grouped into two semi-finals on 2 and 4 March. Six from each semi-final were selected, using 100% televoting, to proceed to the final on 6 March. The most famous songwriter taking part was Andrej Babic, writer of various Eurovision songs in recent years.
The final was a closely fought affair, with the winner being determind by a 50/50 split of jury and televote. Há dias assim by Filipa Azevedo won , beating Babic's song Canta por mim into second place. Canta por mim did however win the televote.
Há dias assim
Que nos deixam sós
A alma vazia
A mágoa na voz
Gastámos as mãos
Tanto as apertámos
Já não há palavras
Foi de tanto as calarmos
Há uma canção
Que não te cantei
Versos por rimar
Poemas que nunca inventei
Quem nos pôs assim?
A vida rasgada
Quem te me levou?
Roubou-me a alma
Mas de ti não sabe nada
Há dias assim
Não há que esconder
Recear palavras
Amar ou sofrer
Ocultar sentidos
Fingir que não há
Há dias perdidos
Entre cá e lá
Há uma canção
Que não te cantei
Versos por rimar
Poemas que nunca inventei
Quem nos pôs assim?
A vida rasgada
Quem te me levou?
Roubou-me a alma
Mas de ti não sabe nada
Sei que um dia saberás
Que a vida é uma só
Não volta atrás
Quem nos pôs assim?
A vida rasgada
Quem te me levou
Roubou-me a alma
Mas de ti não sabe nada
There are such days
That leave us alone
The soul empty
The hurt in our voice
We wore away our hands
We hold them tight so much
There are no words anymore
Because we kept quiet so much
There is a song
Which I have not sung to you
Verses that are still to rhyme
Poems that I have never invented
Who set us this way?
The life torn
Who took you from me?
Stole my soul
But does not know a thing about you
There are such days
There is no need to hide
Fear words
To love or to suffer
To hide senses
To pretend they do not exist
There are lost days
Here and there
There is a song
Which I have not sung to you
Verses that are still to rhyme
Poems that I have never invented
Who set us this way?
The life torn
Who took you from me?
Stole my soul
But does not know a thing about you
I know one day you will know
That life is only one
It does not turn back
Who set us this way?
The life torn
Who took you from me?
Stole my soul
But does not know a thing about you
