Söngvakeppni sjónvarpsins: Is It True?………… to Moscow

Tonight, Iceland held their final after a series of semifinals. The Songvakeppni was an amazing music show for its fans, while choosing the best entry to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow. Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir won the ticket to the Russian capital.

This year’s Icelandic National Final has begun in RUV Tv studios in Rejkavik, Iceland. There were eight songs competing in tonight’s Songvakeppni. Here are the competetors with tonight’s running order:

1. Arnar, Edgar, Sverrir & Ólafur – Easy to Fool
2. Jógvan Hansen – I Think the World of You
3. Kaja Halldórsdóttir – Lygin ein
4. Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Holm – Vórnott
5. Elektra – Got no Love
6. Edgar Smári Atlason – The Kiss We Never Kissed
7. Ingó – Undir regnbogann
8. Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir – Is it True?

The show began with Euroband, who were the 2008 Icelandic representatives. They created a great ambiance with the songs Wild Dances (winner of 2004 Eurovision Song Contest) and last year’s Icelandic entry, This Is My Life.

The show was hosted by two amazingly beautiful girls, Ragnhildur Steinunn Jónsdóttir and Eva María Jónsdóttir, who sometimes made fun of each others voices with the Helium gases from a balloon. Fans also visited the green room frequently. Before each song began, all the singers gave us an interview and showed their special talents.

The first song performed was by four guys, Arnar, Edgar, Sverrir and Olafur in a cowboy style with their song, Easy to Fool. This song reminded everyone of 1980’s pop music with guitars.

The second performance, I Think the World of You by Jogvan Hansen was performed in the usual style of Hansen, and he tried to fill the empty stage with a good performance. However, it was hard to see this ballad winning many votes.

The third performance came from Kaja with the song, Lygin Ein. This song was a bit more up tempo than the other two songs. Kaja performed her song successfully with backing vocals and dancing girls dressed in black.

The fourth performance of the night came from a beautiful woman in blue, Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Holm singing Vórnott. This was the first time an Icelandic instrument was being used in the show tonight. Although she had a 1970’s style, the song was performed very well.

Song number five, Got No Love, was performed in rock & pop style by girl band Electra. The girls gave everything to the performance. This powerful song was one of the best of the night.

Everyone tasted Edgar Smari Atlason’s voice twice tonight, as he was performing the first song, Easy to Fool. Now it was time for The Kiss We Never Kissed. It seems it was not bad at all singing a ballad twice in a night. Although the performance was good, everyone listened to an average song.

The seventh song, Undir Reginnbogan, was performed by Ingo. It was like another oldies night, tonight. Though there were ethnic melodies, the song seemed to lack something compared to the other six songs.

The eighth performance is another one of the best tonight. A wonderfull ballad song, Is It True by Johanna, transported viewers to a dream world with an amazing performance. If this song wins, Chiara probably would be in trouble.

Before the results were revealed, there was a little break for the vievers to vote. Johanna and Ingo led and were the top two at the end of the night. Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir was chosen as the winner with the song, Is It True. She will be performing the song on 12th of May in the first Semi Final in Moscow.
