Austria has found the secret of a good Eurovision song

Another faultless performance from Nadine Beiler this afternoon has made people sit up and take notice.  The Austrians should be very pleased that a place in the final seems assured.

The Austrians should be very pleased with young Nadine’s confident rehearsal today.  There have been a few tweaks since Tuesday, the main one being the introduction of dry ice.  The backing singers will join Nadine on stage half way through, meaning she has the stage to herself – a daunting prospect.

Nadine wears a short backless black dress, and her five backing singers are all in long black dresses.  She sings the first 25 seconds of the song unaccompanied, on a dark set with blue lights. The lights gradually change colour from blue to white and move up and down with the song.  The back drop features diamonds giving this song a touch of class.

It’s all very gospel in sound and drew lots of applause from the press that had asembled to watch.  After having seen another ballad earlier on, this was much better.

If Austria don’t make the final next week, they should be very disappointed.

In my view

When I artrived in Düsseldorf, I had this as a borderline qualifier.  I didn’t think Europe would really want a ballad this year.  And the fans out there might think another song should have won the Austrian final.  After having seen Nadine rehearse, I can say this has gone up in my estimations.  She’s assured, and it’s all been faultless.  Lisa Andreas had a very song back in 2004 which did really well.  I don’t think this is a winner, but it should breeze through to the final and with a good draw, who knows.
