2549 songs submitted to Melodifestivalen – lowest number for years

Early Tuesday morning was the deadline for sending entries to the swedish national selection Melodifestivalen 2013. A total of 2549 songs were counted which could be compared to 3485 songs that was sent in last year.

The producer of Melodifestivalen Christer Björkman don’t seem really worried about the fact that this is the lowest number of submitted songs since 2002.

"Finally we have made the publishers and songwriters more critical before sending in songs. Earlier there has been songs returning year after year which built up the total number of songs. But it’s the quality that is decisive and this is a manageable amount of songs for the selection jury".

1902 of the songs has been sent in for the regular competition where, at least, 15 songs later will be picked out for Melodifestivalen 2013.

647 songs has been submitted to the public competition called "allmänhetens tävling" where at least one song is guaranteed one of the 32 places in Melodifestivalen.

The remaining 16 songs will be special invitations from SVT or songs that SVT picks from the regular compatition. One of the 16 will be, as reported earlier, Terese Fredenwall. A closer look at the rules of the 2013 competition can also be found in our previous article.

The name of the 32 songs and the songwriters will be announced by the end of October.
